Filabot in Print

At Filabot, we're always trying to get our hands on a new book. Whether it's the Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg to inform the organizational habits of our company or The Seven Day Weekend by Ricardo Semler, we're trying to inform and reform how we do things.

We've said it before and we'll say it again: it's always an experiment at Filabot and we like it that way.

The more ideas, more knowledge and information kicking around in our heads, the more we can expand our own thoughts and ideas about filament extrusion and plastic recycling.

We love a good book! And we've been fortunate enough to be covered in a couple of books written about 3D printing and additive manufacturing. While we're all about modesty and constant improvement, we're also extremely proud to be considered by these works and celebrate our recognition.

Below are a number of books we've been mentioned in, and though we haven't read all of them, they're certainly on our list!

1. The Zero Marginal Cost Society by Jeremy Rifkin
Covering the emergence of the Internet of Things, Jeremy Rifkin covers innovations, ideas and institutions that signal the coming change in how we do things as a global, collaborative society.

“Free-market traditionalists have trouble recognizing that the future of governance and economics lies with the Commons—a world of collaboration, sharing, ecological concern and human connection.  Jeremy Rifkin deftly describes the powerful forces that are driving this new paradigm and transforming our personal lives and the economy. A highly readable account of the next big turn of the wheel.”

—David Bollier, author of Think Like a Commoner: A Short Introduction to the Life of the Commons

2. Building from Waste: Recovered Materials in Architecture and Construction by Dirk Hebel, Felix Heisel, and Marta H. Wisniewska
This book discusses the materials and products that make use of waste as a resource in architectural, interior and industrial design. Covering the concepts and practical applications of waste being transformed into valuable resources, Building from Waste inventories of materials, products and projects related to recovered materials.

3. 3D Printing: A Practical Guide for Librarians by Sara Russell Gonzalez and Denise Beaubien Bennett
Writing from experience, these authors outline the trials and tribulations they faced while developing a 3D printing program at a large academic library. As early adopters of 3D printing technology, Gonzalez and Bennett provide valuable, step by step insight for librarians looking to establish their own programs.

4. Fabricated: The New World of 3D Printing Hod Lipson and Melba Kurman
This work covers 3D printing as it was emerging at the beginning of the decade. From fashion to manufacturing, Fabricated tells the story of 3D printing, it's potential impacts and uses as a technology of the 21st century. A mix of business strategy and popular science, this book opens up on how 3D printing can change the world.

Well, there you have it: a number of books that cover who we are as Filabot and how we fit into the 3D printing scene. While this industry and community grows, we often ask how we can better leverage the plastic waste that is constantly being generated. While we haven't read all of these books, a number of us are working through them and all in all, they are highly recommended and topical works related to the world of 3D printing.

What are you reading?

Best,
The Filabot Team
